Travel Medicine Specialist

TRAVEL MEDICINE SPECIALIST

Dr. Fréchette is dedicated to helping people travel to their destinations in a healthy, safe and enjoyable manner.

During a comprehensive travel medicine consult, Dr. Fréchette provides: current travel health information, precise travel vaccinations for their destinations, counseling for preventable travel health risks, as well as medical advisories and outbreak information. Recommendations regarding pre-travel immunizations and medication will be made based on your personal travel plans. The pretravel history includes documentation of all of the places the patient plans to visit, the time of year for the trip, the purpose of the visit and the duration of stay. In addition, the patient's allergy history should be reviewed, as well as medical and vaccination history. Current diseases, medications and allergies influence vaccine indications and contraindications. Each piece of information assists in determining the relative risks and benefits of vaccines and medicines for the trip.

Travel Medicine is a relatively new field that began as recently as the 1980s. It was developed in response to a growing number of people making international trips, especially to less developed countries. Thanks to great strides in public health, many common diseases have been eliminated in the United States. That is not the case, however, in many other countries around the world. Some countries still have problems maintaining a sanitary water supply. Other countries have diseases that Americans may not normally be exposed to. Lastly, a traveler may come into contact with insects and parasites not normally found in the United States.

Each year as many as 45 million Americans travel abroad, with about 20 million of them spending time in rural areas or developing countries, locations where the risks of contracting an illness are great. The scale on which travel takes place today could hardly have been imagined even ten years ago. Destinations that in the past were limited to soldiers, missionaries and explorers, are becoming commonplace choices for the adventurous traveler from the United States and other Western countries. As the world becomes more integrated and businesses become more "globalized," there will be increased international travel. Along with the increase in this type of travel comes exposure to health risks that, in large part, are new to Americans. In response to this, Travel Medicine has evolved as a medical specialty. The principle aim of those involved in providing medical care for travelers is to prevent health problems before they occur. There are well-established preventive measures for almost every health issue that falls under the scope of Travel Medicine.

Immunizations may be required for entry into certain countries. Other vaccines, such as Hepatitis A and B, may be highly recommended for personal safety. Malaria is a significant health hazard in much of the developing world. Malaria prevention can be maximized through the use of appropriate anti-malarial drugs and personal protective measures. Travelers' Diarrhea and exposure to exotic infections may be minimized by practicing proper food and water hygiene and following other specific preventive advice. Environmental hazards and geographical conditions such as pollution and high altitudes may affect a traveler's health and comfort. Preparing for these conditions will enhance the safety and enjoyment of travel. Persons with existing medical conditions, such as heart and lung disease, are advised of the potential stresses and hazards of their itinerary, as these relate to their condition. Pregnant women and young children often need particular recommendations related to their travel.

Dr. Fréchette encourages travelers to start their immunizations at least one month prior to travel to maximize the vaccine's effectiveness to prevent illness. Completing an immunization schedule before departure is the first and most important step you can take to prevent travel related disease.  Travelers should allow enough time to be immunized according to established schedules. Although some vaccines can be given on an accelerated basis, some travel could be delayed or complicated by not arranging immunization in a timely manner.

For additional information, please review the websites below regarding your particular travel destination and what medications, vaccinations, and security warnings may be issued in that region.

At Le Docteur, we provide the following immunizations: Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Influenza, Japanese Encephalitis, Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Meningococcal, Polio, Rabies, Tetanus - Diphtheria, Typhoid, and other FDA approved vaccines.
